Question of the Week- II
This is from our lesson of 1 Thess Chapter 2.
Many people were accusing Paul of having wrong motives and tricking others out of greed. So, how did Paul defend himself?
First person to tag the right answer wins!
Last week, no one got it until I gave out like the most obvious clue! Haha.. so not counted!
This Sunday is combine service at 930am! Lets go out for lunch after that ok? We need to expend our $10 prize money!

Free Will
Wow! Lyn's first post! Sorry I just saw it only... thanks for such an honest entry. And thank God that you manage to get through your presentation! I believe God was with you through out! That's how God helped me through every single presentation (and class lessons too).
Today we played this little game to test if we know each other well enough. It's called cai cai wo shi shui. Lyn brought 2 newcomers too! I hope they enjoyed themselves today.
We had some sharing time where we had to share about certain dilemma we had during the week. It was very interesting and many of us shared deeper, beyond just the "Hi I'm xx and this week is fine." kind of sharing.
Carolyn is considering taking up this debating thing which takes up alot of time every Sat. Lon Hau has to fight the temptation of DOTA every night. Ben and Jonathan S has to juggle between study time and CCA. Lyn has to forget someone (hee). Jeremy wanted to do well for NAPFA. Nic has difficulty forgiving this girl who took his help for granted.
I forgot to share mine! For me, my struggle is whether to share my personal testimony at my wedding.
Most importantly, we learn that God gave us the privilege of free will. Because we are not robots, we are given the freedom to choose for ourselves. Sometimes we make good decisions. Sometimes the choices in front of us are neutral. But other times, we may end up making bad choices. Whatever it is, we learnt that God is with us and His grace will help us even when we do end up with making a foolish decision.
But that doesn't excuse us from doing the right thing because God gave us free will and we need to use it properly. Paul in 1 Thessalonian Chapter 2 expresses what keeps him from choosing the right thing to do.
We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. -1 Thess 2:4
Paul is motivated by wanting to please God rather than men. This is different from trying to be good so that God will love us more. God's love and grace is there no matter how good or bad we are. It is unconditional. Rather, we want to love God and please Him because of all the things that He has done for us.
So one question this week you need to think about is whenever you are facing any decision, are you pleasing God? Are you pleasing God in your school, at home or when you are with your friends? What makes God smile? Ask God and I'm sure He will tell you.
I want to end with this quote from Eric Liddell. He is the winner of the 100m dash at the Olympics in 1924. At that time, he was participating in the Olympics, before heading to China to be a missionary.
"I believe God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure."
What can you do this week that will please God?

Hey
Hello! This is my first time blogging here cus my computer has been down for several weeks. School life has been really exhausting. My parents are irritating. I am already stressed out my school and there they go rambling on my messy nature and alot of things they are unhappy about. How annoying! Looking on the brighter side of life, God has been watching over me this week. School wasnt as bad as i expected it to be. I had to give this presentation infront of my whole class and I was experiencing jitters the night before. As i stood at the front , all those 38 pair of eyes staring intently at me, i felt really nervous and scared . It was intimidating. Yes by nature I am painfully shyy but I tend to put up a brave front cus there are evil people out there who takes advantage of that weakness. Anyway bottom line I managed to pull through in the end. Yeahhh there must have been an invisible force pushing me to do the speech..
Okay just an update about my life this week.. God bless everyone in the upcoming week ... - lynette-

Hiyaz
Hey. Finally found time to post, (while doing "homework"). Yup...I was correct, this week is gonna be really bad for me =P I've been sleeping through class and have been half awake during choir. Only reason i can sing is cos the words come automatically through my mouth nowadays. Well, about last Sunday's lesson, I feel that i have something at school that happened that is connected with tat. You see, on monday's chapel, which is REALLY dull cos nobody has that spirit that is always in church. What a lot of people do during chapel is just.....sleep. So, during worship, me and Lawrence( my best friend, and yes lon hau its that lawrence ) were the only people singing. So Lawrence stood up, and he was the only person standing up in the auditorium. Immediatedly, six hands reached out and pulled him down. And everyone was laughing at him about it. Well, i feel that that is kinda despicable and also shows why we cant be like the Thessalonians. Most of us are always held back by the chains wound around us by others...always wanting to be among the in-gang and lose your own personality. I feel that if you want to be religious, then that is your own decision and nobody else shou;d make it for you. Lots of people always say lots of things on sunday, making empty promises and in the end, on monday, they end up being one of the six hands that grabbed my friend when he tried to show that our fellow students were acting like hypocrites and not being the christians they should be. Being a christian only on Sunday does not make you a real christian. Truth is, even if you dont go to church, or dont have a christian family, if you act like a christian and have that strong belief in god, then it makes you an even better christian than all the other Sunday christians.
Ben P.S. Dont worry Yasmine, we'll be busy during you're dinner anyway due to the xtrainers thing

Well said, Carolyn! I'm referring to your reflections on the lesson. I think you are right about the Thessalonians! Maybe something we should change about the way we live? People, please let me know what you think about the lesson too ok?
Carolyn, all the best for your sports meet!
I just realised I still have the $10 voucher for Plaza Sing. We should set a date when we can go PS after class! Maybe we can have ice cream! But I don't want Gelare. Their ice cream is not so nice nowadays.

Hey, its carolyn. I'm munching on chocolate chip cookies now. Yum, Lyn and I baked them okay! SO NICE. =) Okay, uh...I'm reading a Janet Evanovich novel now called motor mouth, its nice. School today was quite okay, considering that I had to turn up at 7am at the track to train for this friday's sports day. fwebifewbiwbfiew. Anyways, we had spirit of the class cheer competition and the cheer turned out pretty awry. But still, we had fun! I had marching too, for this friday. Yes, I know I'm ranting again, but I shall now start thinking about yesterday's lesson. Uh... i feel that the Thessalonians were able to be so 'on fire' for a number of reasons: 1)They didn't have modern distractions like the television. 2) They weren't afraid of being judged or criticised. 3)They were open minded and could accept what Paul taught them entirely.
Yupp. So let us just pray that we too would be able to receive Jesus with deep conviction, because only then, can be truly experience and feel Him.
Righto, Yasmine, the wedding ceremony itself is seperate from the dinner right? So are we supposed to go for the ceremony or dinner ah?
Okay, I wanna go train now, bye bye.

Words or Conviction?
Yoohoo!
Today we played this game which I called Fastest Finger First. Basically, each pair is suppose to stand back-to-back, and then turn around and then guess how many fingers the other person is holding. We had a face off and Sean is our Fastest Finger Reader!
Our lesson today is on 1 Thessalonians Chapter 1. The book of 1 Thessalonians was a letter written by Paul to the people at Thessalonica. What happened was that Paul went to that place, preached the gospel and left after a few weeks. He was worried that the Thessalonians will forget about their faith. To his surprise, the Thessalonians held fast to their beliefs depite the persecutions they faced. Their faith was so famous that the whole of Macedonia and Achaia knew about them.
Put it in our context, just imagine the youths at YM congregated for YM camp and a speaker came over to tell us about Jesus. During the camp, the youths were fired up for God. Even after the speaker left, the youths continued to be on fire for Jesus. Months later, they are still jumping during worship, doing their QT everyday, meeting up consistently.
Back in those days, there was no TV or internet or even radio! Yet, the fame of the Thessalonians faith spread far and wide! Imagine how great their faith must have been!
The extent of their fame is as if the whole South East Asia and Australia have heard about YM! Sad to say, we are not even close to that.
Why is that so?
Lynette said it's because we don't have their courage. Someone mentioned that it's because they had confirmation of Christ's resurrection, but we don't really have. Their faith is greater.
I think we can gather our answers from verse 5: "... because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction."
It was because whatever they heard from Paul was not just words. It came to them with power of the Holy Spirit. They felt something inside of them, stirring within them when they received the gospel. But more importantly, they had deep conviction.
We discussed what conviction was.
A whole list of definitions came up: -assurance -strong belief -great faith
According to dictionary.com, convictions is: -a fixed or firm belief -the act or process of convincing -an unshakable belief in something without the need for proof or evidence -finding by the judge or jury that the accused is guilty of a crime
Conviction comes from the word "convict". You usually get convicted of something negative. For example, John was convicted of murder. You don't use conviction for positive things like John was convicted of donating money to the needy.
So, conviction is actually a realisation of how small and how guilty you are in front of a BIG, HOLY, and MAGNIFICENT God.
My challenge for you guys is, this week, ask yourself: Is Christianity just plain words to you or something you hang onto with DEEP CONVICTION?
Ask God to reveal to you which one are you. Because, if it's just words, Christianity will mean nothing to you. You will just be a sunday christian. There's nothing special in your life. BUT if you receive Jesus with deep CONVICTION, your life will never be the same again. You have purpose and everyday is such great excitement and joy.
Ok. I will stop here. On Wed, I will post a question. The first person to answer on the tagboard wins a prize! =)

Games Games!
Carolyn, I didn't know you play so much games! haha
Personally, I don't really like computer games that much (maybe sims, puzzle bubble, worms). I tried warcraft but I can't even get past level 2. I feel more stressed playing the game each time I see the enemy attacking me. haha.
But I do play card games like munchkins (you guys will love this game!) and citadels and settlers.
You are right, C. Things must be done in moderation. As long as you are not addicted, you should be fine. But I also think that there are some games out there that can be satanic in nature. Some games can be quite influential as well. As in, even though you might not be addicted, it might affect the way you think. So do movies, songs etc.
Here's a verse I wanna leave with you: Finally, brothers, whateveris true, whateverisnoble, whateveris right, whateveris pure, whateveris lovely, whateveris admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. -Philippians 4:8
Happy Good Friday everyone! Please tag or write something ok so that at least I know people are reading this.

Just a quick one..
I'm on the com, waiting for the driver to come take me, lyn and evey to church for the easter thing. Yup. So let me inform you what I've been doing! Yesterday, I had debate then tll. (guess who i saw? MY DARLING!) Today, I had marching and drills for sports day which is... GASP, next friday. AHAHA. Havent practiced for 4 by 100 and 8 by 50 relay. I can't pass the baton. Haha. I'm going to church soon and OH YES! I made roasted chicken, mushroom soup and sweet potato wedges today in home economics. So funkkkyy. Well, regarding Sunday's lesson, I feel that games are super fun. Certain kinds. This may come as a shock, but I play battleon(ooo, guardian!), runescape(i like it okay!), counter strike and star wars battlefront too! I used to play dragonfable and maplestory. Normally I wouldn't play such games, but you know, haven't the cutest brother playing such games can get me influenced. =) As long as we dont get addicted and start neglecting our normal tasks, I guess its fine. Just keep yourself in check and ensure that you dont cross the play-strictly-for-entertainment-purposes line. Yup. Oooo. I just remembered that Lyn's boyfriend owes me the ACS yearbook for 2005! Aiya. He's so forgetful one. If anyone has it, lend me okay? thanks =)

Games
On Sunday, we had our normal class time again. I miss the group! Last Sunday I couldn't be there because I had to attend another course in another church far far away. I heard from eddie that they played battleship. I thought the game sounded quite fun! but it seems like it didn't really appeal to the group.
Anyway, we played this game called 2 truths and a lie. basically, each one of is to tell 2 truths and a lie, and we are to guess which one is the lie. Some people obviously cannot lie. We learnt some interesting new things about each other... like erm, Jeremy doesn't like sports (if I didn't remember wrongly), Carolyn went for detention before (gasp!)... yup, all the deep dark secrets were revealed.. haha
During our lesson, we had a discussion about games. Actually, my style of teaching is very spontaneous. I actually had another lesson planned (well, according to the curriculum, we were suppose to do the introduction of Thessalonians). But, since on my way to the hall, I met Nic and Jon playing some card games... and when I was in the hall, Lon started talking to me about games... I decided that perhaps it is an interesting topic to talk about. Not so much for me to lecture you guys about what's right or wrong because I think you are old enough to figure it out yourself... but it's good for us to examine together as a group, what is the line we should draw regarding games-- be it card games or computer games. Adriel and Sandy is always talking about games being satanic, and games can be easily addicted. But the TRUTH is, do we really buy that? Are we truly convicted that these games are bad for us? I don't know about you, but I'm sure that we cannot be quick to condemn ALL the games out there right?
So is bringing card games to church right? Can we play them outside church but not IN church?
We concluded that being a christian means that we are to be the same in or outside church. It doesn't matter. We carry Jesus in us wherever we go.
We came up with certain guidelines to follow regarding games: -violence (is there too much disturbing scenes and violence and blood shed?) -addiction (do we play for long hours almost every day such that it affects our relationship with other people?)
If any of you disagree, or have additional views about what we discussed on Sunday, please feel free to write on the TAGBOARD!
Now that we have made these stands, as a small group, let's watch out for each other ok? I think it's important that we grow closer together as a small group by supporting one another!
Nic and Ben have SYF coming up. Nat has softball competitions. Do keep them in prayer ok?
